Significant Milestones in Oil Production Technology

02 Oct

The technology in the production oil has not been left behind in advancing as you will read more here. Because of its importance in our lives, it is best if we take a look at the changes that have taken place since it was discovered. Traditionally, people in Mesopotamia used bitumen to  make boats and hold earrings, necklaces, and bangles together. In Egypt, it was used to solidify the famous pyramids. Bitumen, asphalt and motor led to increased curiosity about oil among people.

The first method used to extract oil was by digging up the soil to reach the oil. The people living in this period used oil to heal diseases, light their lamps and heat their houses. Following the lack of valuable knowledge about oil as read in this site, there many false assumptions about oil fields at the time or you can read more info.

The technology that followed drilling was the use of spring poles. This apparatus which was connected to a tree was made popular by the Ruffner brothers with the intention of reaching more salt deeper in the earth. Despite a hint of the possible things oil could be used for at this time, oil was still not a necessity. However when steam power was introduced, the brothers were able to drill salt at a faster rate.  A chemist at Yale by the name Benjamin Silliman discovered more about distillation of oil into Kerosene that could be used in lamps to provide lighting and even cook. It is at this point that the society became interested in the commodity and commercial drilling began or you read more now.

As you learn more about how the demand for oil surged in this website. The number of oil deposits discovered in the earth increased. However there were hard sediments that made drilling difficult hence the need for improved equipment.  Consequently, a method called rotary drilling emerged whose head could move past the hard sediment with great ease. One event that marked how effectiveness of the rotary drill in the process of oil extraction was observed in Texas when a rig struck a rock resulting into a lot of oil flowing to the surface. With the world war 1 coming around, the demand for oil rose, leading to increased competition which resulted in greater development of oil tools. The most important aspect of the rotary drilling method was to extract oil found very deep into the earth.

Today, the most common method of extracting oil is the rotary rig.  However, they are advanced technologically as they are fitted with digital tracking devices, touchpads and video control to monitor and access the rigs from a fur. As you will see here, the rigs are enhanced compared to the past. One such case is the increased mobility of the rig to extract oil from several oil wells.
